A Long Island family gathering after their mother’s funeral ended in tragedy when a man allegedly killed four relatives before taking his own life. Police are investigating the incident.
Bollywood Fever: In a heartbreaking turn of events, five family members were killed in a tragic murder-suicide on Sunday as they gathered at their mother’s home in Syosset, Long Island, following her funeral.
Police responded to a call about shots fired on Wyoming Court, a quiet cul-de-sac, just before noon.
Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the front lawn. Inside the small blue home, officers discovered four additional victims, all deceased.
The victims have not been officially identified, but the home is reportedly linked to 95-year-old Theresa Martha DeLucia, who was buried just two days earlier.
According to reports, one of DeLucia’s sons, who lived in the house with her, is believed to have shot his siblings and other family members before taking his own life.
The incident is thought to have been triggered by a dispute over the sale of the home, which the family had planned to sell following their mother’s passing.
Real estate agent Mary Macaluso, who was scheduled to meet with the family to discuss listing the home, recounted how the day unfolded. She arrived to find the street closed off by authorities, who had already responded to the scene.
“The kids were all here for the funeral, and they asked me to come look at the house,” Macaluso told Newsday. She explained that the family wanted to quickly assess the property’s value, estimated at nearly $900,000, as some relatives were planning to return to Florida soon.
Neighbors expressed their shock and sorrow over the incident. One neighbor told Fox 5 New York, “I didn’t think that he’d take his whole family, his siblings… I thought maybe he was distraught and he did this to himself only.”
Another resident, Mike Steffens, shared his disbelief with ABC 7, saying, “At first I heard it was a murder-suicide, and that’s pretty bad. And then I heard four people murdered and then a suicide… It’s something you don’t hear very often, let alone in your own town.”
Wendy Paisner, another neighbor, called the incident a “tragedy for the family” in her remarks to NBC 4 New York.
Nassau County police have not yet released the identities of the victims, the shooter, or the specifics of the weapon used. Further details are expected to be revealed on Monday as the investigation continues.
