The Florida Gators must choose between starting veteran QB Graham Mertz or star freshman D.J. Lagway for their upcoming game against Texas A&M. Experts weigh in on the decision.
BollywoodFever: As the Florida Gators prepare for their matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies, head coach Billy Napier faces a difficult decision: start seasoned quarterback Graham Mertz or give freshman standout D.J. Lagway the nod.
Mertz, recovering from an injury last weekend, is a proven veteran, while Lagway impressed in his recent performance.
On ESPN’s “SEC Nation,” Tim Tebow argued that Mertz should start, citing his experience and potential to be a future NFL quarterback.
Tebow pointed out that Texas A&M’s strong defensive line, coached by Mike Elko, might overwhelm Lagway, making Mertz’s experience crucial.
“Does he need to play? Absolutely,” Tebow said of Lagway. But to throw him in there and say, ‘It’s all on your shoulders,’ I just don’t know if that’s right for the young man.”
Not everyone agreed with Tebow. Roman Harper and Jordan Rodgers advocated for Lagway to start, with Harper emphasizing the need for consistency and noting that Lagway’s size and athleticism could help him handle defensive pressure better.
The Gators’ highly anticipated game against the Aggies kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
