NFL Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton believes Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ playstyle isn’t unique, stating Mahomes’ skills mirror his own from the Super Bowl era.
BollywoodFever: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on track to potentially finish as the greatest quarterback in NFL history, surpassing even Tom Brady with his seven Super Bowl championships.
Known for his precise passing and ability to scramble, Mahomes has racked up nearly 2,000 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 98 regular-season games.
His creativity and versatility have guided the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances and three championships between 2018 and 2023.
However, NFL Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, a legendary quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, recently voiced his thoughts on Mahomes’ celebrated style of play.
In an interview with The Athletic on September 17, Tarkenton argued that Mahomes isn’t doing anything new. “Patrick Mahomes doesn’t do anything I didn’t do. Nothing,” Tarkenton asserted.
Tarkenton, who played 18 seasons in the NFL (1961-1978) and earned nine Pro Bowl selections, added, “I was just the first one who did it … with a fullback and two halfbacks!” The Hall of Famer also noted that he would be even more successful in today’s NFL due to the more open, spread-out field.
During his career, Tarkenton led the Vikings to three Super Bowl appearances but never secured a title. He amassed over 47,000 passing yards, 342 touchdowns, and 3,674 rushing yards, along with 32 rushing touchdowns. Despite his impressive stats, Tarkenton remains without a Super Bowl ring—something Mahomes has achieved three times in his six seasons as a starter.
While Mahomes’ legacy continues to build, Tarkenton’s comments highlight that the dual-threat style has roots in NFL history, with Tarkenton pioneering many of the attributes now celebrated in modern quarterbacks.
