Australia’s Fraser McReight is fit again after playing through July with a broken hand and is ready for the Rugby Championship showdown against the All Blacks.
BollywoodFever: Australia’s flanker Fraser McReight revealed he unknowingly played through all of the July internationals with a broken hand, only discovering the injury after a scan later in the season. Despite sustaining the injury in the first minute of the opening test against Wales, McReight played on through the series, including the one-off test against Georgia, before undergoing surgery to repair the fracture.
I thought it was hopefully a ligament issue,” McReight shared with reporters on Monday. “I’m glad I got the surgery done and sorted. Longevity and health are important.”
McReight’s injury was kept quiet while he recovered, leaving him to watch the Wallabies’ on-field struggles from the sidelines. Australia lost both home tests to South Africa and were handed a crushing 67-27 defeat by Argentina in Santa Fe, ending their hopes of winning the Rugby Championship.
However, McReight is now fully recovered and eager to return to action as the Wallabies face their biggest challenge: the Bledisloe Cup series against New Zealand. The All Blacks have held the annual trophy since 2003, but Australia has a chance to reclaim it if they win or draw in the upcoming tests in Sydney and Wellington.
Despite the Wallabies’ poor form, McReight downplayed their defeat in Santa Fe, calling it an outlier. “If you look at the two games over there, we played three great halves of footy and had one slip-up,” he said. The team has since taken a break and returned rejuvenated for the Bledisloe Cup showdown.
There’s a buzz about playing the All Blacks, one of the best teams in the world,” McReight added. “There’s no worry about the team not getting up for it.”
With McReight’s tenacity at the breakdown back in the lineup, Australia hopes to pull off an upset and end New Zealand’s long-held dominance in the Bledisloe Cup.
