William Maury, a representative of the police union Alliance Police Nationale, confirmed the incident on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A car exploded in front of the synagogue in La Grande-Motte. A local police official was injured.” Maury also assured that the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Local media reports indicated that two cars were set on fire, with at least one containing a gas canister, which likely contributed to the explosion.
The police have confirmed that the incident is being treated as an attempted arson but have not released further details as the investigation is ongoing.
France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin responded to the incident on X, expressing solidarity with the Jewish community and the residents of La Grande-Motte. “I want to assure our fellow Jewish citizens and the city of all my support and say that at the request of President Emmanuel Macron, all means are being mobilized to find the author,” Darmanin stated.
As the investigation continues, police are actively searching for the suspect responsible for the attempted arson. The incident has heightened security concerns, and authorities are urging vigilance in the community.
The explosion comes at a time when tensions around security and anti-Semitism are particularly sensitive in France, prompting swift action from law enforcement to ensure the safety of all citizens.
