GE Vernova reports that recent offshore wind turbine blade failures in the U.S. and UK are unrelated. The company is taking corrective measures as it continues to work on Dogger Bank and Vineyard Wind projects.
Bollywood Fever: Energy equipment maker GE Vernova has issued a statement addressing recent turbine blade failures at two offshore wind farms, one in the United States and the other in the United Kingdom, emphasizing that the incidents are unrelated.
The latest mishap, which occurred on August 22 at the Dogger Bank wind farm off the coast of Yorkshire, was attributed to strong winds.
This announcement follows a series of three blade accidents within four months at two wind farms still under construction, raising concerns about potential broader issues.
Despite the challenges, GE Vernova shares saw a 3% increase, trading at $197.02 on the New York Stock Exchange.
The most recent incident at Dogger Bank happened just over a month after a blade failure at the Vineyard Wind project off the coast of Massachusetts, where debris was sent onto nearby beaches.
Another blade at Dogger Bank was damaged during installation in May. The Vineyard Wind blade damage was previously attributed to a manufacturing flaw, prompting concerns about a widespread issue across the company’s projects.
GE Vernova explained that the latest failure at Dogger Bank occurred when the turbine rotor was locked in place and the yaw system, which typically orients the rotor towards the wind, was disabled.
This left the turbine vulnerable during a large storm while it was in the process of being commissioned.
The company assured that it is taking corrective actions to mitigate risks during such events.
“We continue to investigate the recent offshore wind events involving our blades and are taking every necessary step with customers and authorities to safely move forward with the installation of the Dogger Bank and Vineyard Wind farms,” GE Vernova said in a statement. “Our current analyses indicate that the causes of the recent blade events are unrelated.”
Dogger Bank is a collaborative project between Britain’s SSE Renewables and Norwegian companies Equinor and Vargronn. Meanwhile, Vineyard Wind is a joint venture between Avangrid, the U.S. arm of Spain’s Iberdrola, and Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
As GE Vernova works to resolve these issues, the company remains committed to ensuring the safe and successful completion of these major offshore wind projects.
