A fire at the BioLab chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia, has led to evacuations and road closures after a sprinkler malfunction triggered a chemical reaction. Residents are urged to stay away and shelter in place.
BollywoodFever: A fire at BioLab, a chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia, has forced local evacuations and road closures after a malfunctioning sprinkler head triggered a dangerous chemical reaction. The fire, which began early Sunday morning around 5 a.m. ET, reignited hours later despite initial containment efforts by firefighters.
The incident occurred when water from the faulty sprinkler head came into contact with a water-reactive chemical, producing a hazardous plume. Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett urged residents to stay away from the area, noting that firefighters were struggling to control both the blaze and the resulting traffic disruptions.
Evacuations and Road Closures
Residents between Sigman Road and Interstate 20 have been asked to evacuate, while the interstate is closed in both directions between Salem Road and Turner Hill. Additionally, those living north of Sigman Road were advised to shelter in place and keep windows closed. Nearby residents were also instructed to turn off air conditioning to minimize exposure to potential hazards.
Fire History at BioLab
This is not the first incident at the BioLab plant. In September 2020, a similar fire broke out due to a “thermal decomposition event” caused by water entering the plant during Hurricane Laura, sparking a chemical reaction. That event also temporarily closed Interstate 20.
Conyers, located about 30 miles east of Atlanta, remains on high alert as firefighters and authorities work to contain the fire and manage public safety.
