European Championship newcomers Georgia earned their first point with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic. Both teams now face must-win final group games to advance.
Germany, Bollywood Fever: European Championship newcomers Georgia earned their first point of the tournament in a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic on Saturday, a result that leaves both teams needing to win their final Group F game to have any chance of advancing.
Georges Mikautadze put Georgia ahead with a stoppage-time penalty at the end of the first half. The lead was short-lived, as Patrik Schick equalized in the 59th minute when the ball rebounded off the far post and onto his chest following Ondrej Lingr’s glancing header from a corner.
With both the Czechs and Georgia having lost their opening games, they each now have just one point, increasing the pressure to secure a win in their last group matches on Wednesday.
Portugal and Turkey were set to play later in Dortmund in Saturday’s other Group F game, further shaping the dynamics of the group standings.
