Giants Navigate Roster Cuts with Transparency: Isaiah Hodgins Lands on Practice Squad

Must read

The New York Giants faced tough decisions during roster cuts, with receiver Isaiah Hodgins landing on the practice squad. Coach Brian Daboll emphasizes transparency in the process.

Bollywood Fever: The New York Giants had a challenging week as they trimmed their roster from 90 to 53 players, a process filled with difficult decisions and emotional conversations. For many players, it marked the end of their professional football careers, while a select few found new opportunities, either with other teams or on practice squads. Among the latter was Giants receiver Isaiah Hodgins.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll spoke candidly about the team’s approach during what is often considered the toughest week on the NFL calendar.

“I think you’re just honest with the players,” Daboll explained. “I’m not going to divulge too much, out of respect to Isaiah, but you’re just clear. You’re open with them. We wanted him to come back to the practice squad. Again, that’s up to him, too, as well.”

Hodgins, who etched his name into Giants lore with a standout performance in the 2022 Wild Card Round against the Minnesota Vikings, found himself in a more uncertain position after an unproductive 2023 season. Despite his heroics, which included eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in that playoff victory, the emergence of rookie Malik Nabers and other pass-catching options made Hodgins’ place on the roster less secure. His lack of special teams value also contributed to his relegation to the practice squad.

The decision to stay with the Giants was Hodgins’ choice, and it likely wasn’t made lightly. Whether it was his comfort with the coaching staff, the potential for a quick promotion to the active roster, or his rapport with the team’s quarterbacks, Hodgins opted to remain in New York.

Daboll emphasized the importance of transparency and open communication during the cut-down process, stating, “You’ve got to be transparent with the players and have open lines of communication and be upfront and honest with them. If my son was in that situation, that’s how I would want people to treat him.”

While Hodgins is not currently on the active roster, his perseverance and past flashes of brilliance could see him back on the field if injuries occur. The Giants’ approach to handling this difficult period may have played a significant role in Hodgins’ decision to stay with the team, highlighting the importance of respect and honesty in the NFL’s often ruthless business.

As the Giants move forward, Hodgins remains a player to watch, especially if the team’s depth is tested throughout the upcoming season. His journey may serve as a reminder of the fine line between making a roster and fighting to stay in the league.
