Gillian Anderson opens up about her 90s pin-up shoots, the contrast between her glamorous image and real life, and her new project exploring women’s sexual fantasies.
Bollywood Fever: Gillian Anderson has candidly described her 90s pin-up shoots during The X-Files era as “preposterous,” shedding light on the stark contrast between her glamorous magazine covers and her real-life experiences.
The 56-year-old actress, who was once voted the world’s sexiest woman in 1996, recently reflected on how surreal it felt to balance her iconic image with the realities of work and motherhood.
In an interview with The Guardian, Anderson shared,Â
“It felt so preposterous to me. If you saw my life and where I am half the time—between work, set, kids, driving, drop-offs, and pick-ups—the fact that you’d end up with those pictures is just so… It’s just part of the fantasy. It doesn’t feel like it represents me at all.”
These candid reflections come as Anderson discusses her latest project, Want, a book that delves into women’s sexual fantasies.
Inspired by Nancy Friday’s 1973 classic My Secret Garden, the book compiles anonymous letters from women revealing their deepest desires.
Anderson highlighted the ongoing shame surrounding women’s sexual desires, expressing shock that many women, including herself, still feel inhibited about expressing them, even privately.
Despite portraying a sex therapist in Netflix’s Sex Education, Anderson admitted she struggled to write down her own fantasy for the book, illustrating that even a Hollywood star isn’t immune to societal pressures on women.
Reflecting on her career, Anderson credited her role as the confident and unapologetic DS Stella Gibson in The Fall for helping her embrace her own sexual power in her 40s.
“Like only in the last three or four years have I felt comfortable enough in my own skin… to reveal more of that aspect of me,” she shared.
As she approaches 60, Anderson is embracing a new chapter in both her professional and personal life. In addition to taking on high-profile roles like Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s Scoop, she has also launched ventures like her soft drinks brand, G Spot.
Anderson, a mother of three, revealed that she is setting an example for women everywhere that it is never too late to start something new.
Gillian Anderson currently lives in London with her teenage sons, Oscar and Felix, whom she shares with ex-partner Mark Griffiths.
She is also the mother of her older daughter, Piper, whom she had in her 20s with her first husband, Clyde Klotz, an art director she met on the set of The X-Files.
