Girona manager Michel remains optimistic despite a challenging start to the LaLiga season, calling on fans to support the team as they adapt to changes after a stellar previous year.
Bollywood Fever: Girona manager Michel remains unfazed by his team’s slow start to the LaLiga season, despite failing to secure a win in their first two matches.
After a remarkable campaign last year, where the Catalan side unexpectedly competed with Real Madrid for the title, even defeating Barcelona twice and finishing third to qualify for the Champions League, this season’s beginning has been less inspiring.
Following a disappointing draw against Real Betis in their opener and a 3-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid, Michel urged fans to remain patient as the team finds its footing. “I look at the process, the performance, not the results,” Michel stated during a press conference on Wednesday ahead of their LaLiga clash against Osasuna.
Acknowledging that the team is not yet at its best, Michel remains confident in their ability to perform well in upcoming matches. “Atletico are one of the big candidates to win LaLiga. We’re not as bad as it may have looked like,” he added.
The Girona manager pointed out that the team is still adjusting after losing several key players from last season. Winger Savinho returned to Manchester City, striker Artem Dovbyk transferred to AS Roma, and midfielder Aleix Garcia joined Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite the financial backing from their Abu Dhabi owners, Girona operates on a different level compared to Manchester City, the flagship club of the City Football Group.
Michel also called on Girona’s supporters to rally behind the team during this transitional period. “We need the fans and the best version of ourselves,” Michel said. “Last year we had a great connection with our fans, which helped us win points at home. That’s why I ask our fans to be with us—together, we are stronger.”
He admitted that the preseason preparations were not as thorough as he would have liked due to the new group of players, but he is confident that the team will quickly adapt. “
The team understands what we want, but it’s true that we need to connect more. I am convinced that we will do it quickly,” Michel concluded.
