On 14 January 2007, two days after the film was released, the engagement of its lead actors, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was announced. They were married on 20 April 2007.

Rani Mukerjee was considered for the lead actress.

The film was conceptualized in 1987 during the making of Maniratnam’s movie Nayakan.

John Abraham was offered the role of Shyam Saxena but had to turn it down due to date problems.
