Bollywood Fever: Halsey revealed they “almost lost” their life while dealing with lupus and a rare T-cell disorder, sharing their struggles in a heartfelt Tumblr post on Tuesday. The singer, who uses she/they pronouns, expressed regret over returning to music after facing substantial online hate.
“I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it,” Halsey noted. Reflecting on their illness, they added, “When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what this is anymore and I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back.”
In the post, Halsey, 29, expressed feeling that their own fans had become increasingly harsh. “It used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am,” they shared.
Despite these challenges, Halsey recently returned to music with the release of their singles “The End” and “Lucky,” the latter sampling Britney Spears’ 2000 hit. In the lyrics, Halsey recounts their experiences managing their illnesses: “I shaved my head four times because I wanted to / And then I did it one more time ’cause I got sick.”
“The End” also details their health struggles, with lines like, “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick / Pulls out a brand-new bag of tricks and then they lay it on me / And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain.”
In June, Halsey revealed their lupus and T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder diagnoses from 2022, thanking fans for their “unbelievable amount of love” and “support.” They also confirmed that the diseases were “being managed or in remission.”
Before disclosing the specifics of their diagnoses, Halsey, who is rumored to be engaged to actor Avan Jogia, expressed gratitude for being “lucky to be alive.”
