Heavy Rains Cause Severe Flooding in Austria

Torrential rains and flooding hit Austria, causing severe damage in Alpine regions and parts of Vienna. A record 110 liters of rain per square meter fell in Vienna’s Doebling district.

Austria, Bollywood Fever: Heavy rains over the weekend caused widespread flooding and severe damage in Austria, particularly in Alpine regions and parts of Vienna. 

The downpours disrupted road and rail transport, leading to chaotic scenes across the country.

In the ski resort of St. Anton, torrents of muddy water swept cars through the town, as shown in footage posted on social media.

Meanwhile, Vienna experienced record rainfall, with the Doebling district in the north of the city registering an unprecedented 110 liters of rain per square meter. 

This amount of rainfall in a single hour shattered the city’s previous August records, according to state broadcaster ORF.

One tragic incident involved a woman who was dragged under a bus by the force of the flooding in Doebling. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, ORF reported.

Heavy Rains Cause Severe Flooding in Austria

The heavy rains caused significant disruption, with Vienna’s fire services being called out more than 450 times on Saturday. 

The flooding also brought rail transport to a standstill and caused traffic chaos throughout the capital.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer took to social media platform X to acknowledge the extensive damage caused by the storms and to thank the officials working tirelessly to manage the aftermath.

Vienna typically sees an average of 68 liters of rain per square meter in August, but Saturday’s deluge far exceeded that, approaching the all-time record of 139 liters set on May 15, 1885, according to ORF and weather data firm UBIMET.

As cleanup efforts continue, authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage and preparing for any further weather-related challenges in the coming days.
