At the Democratic National Convention, Hillary Clinton backs Kamala Harris for president, criticizes Donald Trump, and urges voters to fight for truth and progress.
Bollywood Fever: Hillary Clinton took the stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Monday night in Chicago, delivering a powerful speech in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump. Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, now has the opportunity to back another woman vying for the highest office in the nation.
Clinton began by thanking President Joe Biden for his decades of public service, before shifting her focus to the future. “Now we are writing a new chapter in American history. The future is here!” she proclaimed, drawing enthusiastic applause from the energized DNC crowd.
Reflecting on the aftermath of her 2016 defeat, Clinton noted, “We refused to give up on America. Millions marched, many ran for office.” Her comments highlighted the resilience of the Democratic Party and its supporters, who have continued to fight for progressive causes despite setbacks.
In a pointed jab at Trump, Clinton quipped, “Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial. When he woke up, he made his own kind of history, the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions.” The crowd responded with a big cheer, underscoring the continued animosity towards Trump among many Democrats.
Clinton’s support for Harris was clear throughout her speech. “She will never write love letters to dictators,” Clinton said, contrasting Harris with Trump’s controversial foreign relations. Clinton urged Democrats not to be swayed by conspiracy theories and to remain focused on the truth. “We have to fight for Kamala as she will fight for us,” she declared.
Highlighting Harris’s character, Clinton stated, “I know her heart and her integrity. So as President, she will always have our backs.” She emphasized Harris’s commitment to lowering costs for working families, creating good-paying jobs, and restoring abortion rights nationwide.
Clinton concluded her speech with a rallying cry: “Let’s go win it!” energizing the audience for the upcoming election.
Other notable speakers at the convention included Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and President Joe Biden. The evening was a showcase of Democratic unity and a call to action as the party prepares for the 2024 election.
Clinton’s speech also served as a moment of reflection on her own 2016 campaign. In her memoir, What Happened, she admitted to mistakes such as calling half of Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables” and using a private email server—issues that she acknowledged were damaging to her campaign. Despite the past, Clinton’s focus at the DNC was squarely on the future and the fight to elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States.
