BollywoodFever: A tragic getaway to Puerto Rico turned into heartbreak for an Indiana woman and her loved ones.
Cimone Dawson, 22, drowned while trying to save her girlfriend from a riptide during what was meant to be a celebratory trip.
Dawson’s body was recovered nearly 24 hours later in San Juan by the US Coast Guard.
The incident occurred Sunday night when Dawson, along with two friends, was caught in strong rip currents.
While bystanders were able to rescue her friends, Dawson was swept away by the powerful tide as she attempted to save her girlfriend, who was also struggling in the water.
“That’s just the type of person she was,” said Dawson’s cousin, Siajhanai Wean. “Even if I was on that beach and Cimone saw her loved one struggling, I couldn’t even get Cimone not to go back into the water.”
The US Coast Guard launched an extensive search, deploying aircraft, helicopters, and boats to comb the area after a bystander heard screams from the beach.
Dawson had been in Puerto Rico with friends to celebrate a birthday when the tragic event unfolded.
Loved ones described Dawson as an avid traveler who had a special love for Puerto Rico. Her death has left her family devastated, with one cousin expressing, “I felt sick to my stomach. I felt like there were so many words that I wish I could have said.”
Dawson’s heroism and love for those around her will be remembered as family and friends mourn the loss of a bright life cut short.
