J Balvin makes his acting debut in the upcoming feature Little Lorraine, alongside Stephen Amell and Sean Astin. Directed by Grammy-nominated Andy Hines, the film tells the true story of a small Canadian town’s transformation into a drug smuggling hub.
Bollywood Fever: Canada’s Wango Films has wrapped up filming on their highly anticipated feature, Little Lorraine, marking the big-screen debut of Latin music sensation J Balvin, who is often hailed as the “Prince of Reggaeton.”
The film, which also stars Stephen Amell of Arrow fame and Sean Astin from Lord of the Rings and Stranger Things, promises to bring a gripping true story to the big screen.
Little Lorraine was shot across picturesque locations in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. Directed by Grammy-nominated Andy Hines, the film is based on real events from the late 1980s.
It follows the transformation of a remote mining and fishing town into a hub for a major cocaine smuggling operation.
The impressive cast includes Stephen McHattie, Auden Thornton, Matt Walsh, Rhys Darby, Josh Close, Steve Lund, and Sugar Lyn Beard.
In the film, Amell portrays a down-on-his-luck coal miner who takes up work on a lobster boat, only to find himself embroiled in a dangerous drug smuggling ring.
J Balvin, who recently released his new album Rayo, steps into the role of an Interpol agent investigating the Colombian drug cartel suspected of using Cape Breton as a gateway to the U.S.
J Balvin hinted at his acting debut during an interview with Variety last week, stating, “I’ve started acting — like real acting, not just cameos — and I just wrapped filming for a movie I’m in that comes out next year. I love that side of myself.”
Little Lorraine is produced by Tim Doiron and James van der Woerd of Wango Films, alongside Mike Volpe of Topsail Entertainment.
The film is executive produced by April Mullen and Nic Neary. Wango Films is known for producing the sci-fi film Simulant, starring Simu Liu and Sam Worthington, and Wander, featuring Aaron Eckhart and Tommy Lee Jones.
Topsail Entertainment, on the other hand, is recognized for productions like Mr D and Trailer Park Boys.
Tim Doiron, CEO of Wango Films, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “Having grown up on the rugged east coast of Canada, I’ve always been driven to tell a story that truly captures the raw power and untamed beauty of this region and its people.
Little Lorraine is the realization of a lifelong dream to bring this authentic, intense narrative to the big screen.”
Director Andy Hines, known for his award-winning work with artists like Kanye West, Missy Elliott, Luke Combs, and Keith Urban, shared his thoughts on the film’s casting.
“Stephen Amell’s sensibilities for drama offered us such a wealth of depth and possibility as he took on the lead role in this larger-than-life true story.
José [Balvin] and I have been working together for years, and have an incredible rapport in front of and behind the camera.
Having him as a lead in my feature is a dream come true, and I can’t wait for audiences to see him bring this character to life.”
James van der Woerd, COO of Wango Films, added, “Little Lorraine is a film with global resonance, set against the unique cultural tapestry of Cape Breton. This region’s distinctive character adds an authentic depth to the narrative.”
Wango Films plans to launch sales for the film during the fall festival season, with Photon Films handling the Canadian release.
The film’s cast boasts an impressive lineup of talent, with Stephen Amell represented by UTA, Leverage Management, and SOWD; Sean Astin by Stewart Talent, Luber Roklin Entertainment, and attorney Dave Feldman; Rhys Darby by UTA, Artists First, and Yorn Levine Barnes Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner Endlich & Gellman; Matt Walsh by UTA, Artists First, and Ginsburg, Daniels & Kallis; and J Balvin by Roc Nation, WME, and Granderson Des Rochers.
