J.K. Dobbins rushes for 135 yards in his comeback from injury, helping the Chargers to a victory. Dobbins seeks even greater performance against the Carolina defense.
BollywoodFever: J.K. Dobbins made a triumphant return after a year-long recovery from an Achilles injury, rushing for 135 yards on just 10 carries in the Los Angeles Chargers’ 22-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Dobbins, 24, became the first Chargers running back in 17 years to record two runs of 46 yards or more in a single game. However, the explosive back was left wanting more.
“I’ve done a few long sprints instead of shorter sprints. Kind of like track practice,” Dobbins said. “I’ve worked hard on my conditioning this week… If I get those long runs again, I’m going to take it to the crib.”
Dobbins’ road to recovery has been long, marred by multiple injuries. After missing most of last season due to an Achilles tear suffered during Baltimore’s opener, and a severe knee injury in 2021, his comeback performance was even more remarkable. Coach Jim Harbaugh praised Dobbins’ resilience and dedication during rehab. “He did the work with a smile on his face,” Harbaugh said. “To come back to that same standard, and maybe even a little better, is impressive.”
Despite his standout performance, Dobbins is determined to improve both his individual play and the Chargers’ overall running game. Los Angeles struggled with consistency on the ground last season, averaging a league-low 88.1 rushing yards per game after a strong opener. Dobbins knows that maintaining momentum is key to securing the team’s first 2-0 start since 2012. “Right after the game he was saying ‘I could have done this better,’” said offensive coordinator Greg Roman. “That’s the mindset you’ve got to have.”
The upcoming matchup against the Carolina Panthers presents a favorable opportunity for Dobbins and the Chargers. Carolina’s defense allowed 180 rushing yards and two touchdowns in last week’s blowout loss to New Orleans.
Injury Notes: Safety Alohi Gilman is doubtful due to a knee injury, with Tony Jefferson likely to be activated if Gilman is out. Linebacker Joey Bosa is questionable after missing two practices with a back injury. Bosa led the team with seven tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble last weekend.
