James Cameron secures rights to Ghosts of Hiroshima, aiming to direct the adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s forthcoming book. Learn more about the project and Cameron’s future plans.
BollywoodFever: James Cameron is preparing for a new project beyond the Avatar universe.
The renowned filmmaker has acquired the rights to Charles Pellegrino’s forthcoming book Ghosts of Hiroshima, and intends to direct a feature film adaptation of the atomic bomb story, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Set to be published in August 2025, Ghosts of Hiroshima will serve as a companion to Pellegrino’s 2015 work Last Train From Hiroshima.
Cameron’s film will partially focus on the true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person officially recognized as having survived both atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
Yamaguchi, a 29-year-old engineer at the time, was in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, when the U.S. dropped the first bomb.
The following day, he traveled to Nagasaki, where he also survived the second bombing on August 9. The bombings led to the deaths of an estimated 110,000 to 210,000 people.
This project marks Cameron’s first non-Avatar film since 1997’s Titanic. Known for blockbuster hits like the Terminator franchise, Aliens, Titanic, and the Avatar films, Cameron has directed three of the top four highest-grossing movies of all time.
Cameron is currently focused on Avatar: Fire & Ash, due for release in December 2025, and has plans for two additional Avatar sequels. However, he has hinted at possibly stepping back from directing the later films in the franchise, though no final decision has been made.
The collaboration between Shane Salerno of The Story Factory—who represents Pellegrino and is also a co-writer on the Avatar sequels—and Cameron highlights the close ties involved in the project. Cameron is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
