Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara Expecting Second Child
Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have joyously announced their expanding family!
Mara shared the news at the 74th Berlinale International Film Festival while promoting her latest film, La Cocina.
Radiant in a strapless, floor-length gown, she cradled her growing baby bump while gracing the red carpet with her presence.
Already parents to son River, the couple chose the meaningful name in honor of the late brother of the Joker star, River Phoenix, who tragically passed away from a drug overdose in 1993.
The name revelation came from Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky during a film premiere at the Zurich Film Festival in September 2020.
While notoriously private about their personal lives, Mara and Phoenix, who first crossed paths in 2012 on the set of the sci-fi drama Her, have mostly kept their relationship out of the limelight.
They began dating in 2016 during the filming of Mary Magdalene, making their red carpet debut at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2017.
Their engagement in 2019 was quietly confirmed. Phoenix, speaking to Vanity Fair, revealed his initial misunderstanding of Mara’s demeanor during their first encounter, thinking she disliked him when she was merely shy.
Their friendship blossomed into love, with Phoenix admitting he was compelled to look her up online, a first for him.
Mara, though discreet about their romance, has openly discussed their life as parents, emphasizing their “creative household” and the balance they’ve struck while both pursuing acting careers.
She shared insights into their dynamic on the LaunchLeft podcast, highlighting their constant dialogue about creative pursuits and the shared responsibility of raising their son in their artistically driven home.
