Bollywood Fever: Johnny Depp’s second directorial effort, Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, is set to premiere out of competition at the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival.

The festival announced updates to its program on Tuesday, revealing that Depp’s latest project will be featured. The film is a biopic centered on Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Depp, a figure of significant controversy in Hollywood due to the legal turmoil following his split from actress Amber Heard, made his directorial debut with The Brave in 1997. In 2021, he was honored with the prestigious Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival for his lifetime achievements.

Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness stars Riccardo Scamarcio as the Bohemian artist Modigliani and includes performances by Al Pacino, Stephen Graham, and Antonia Desplat. The film is described as “a tale of art, love, and rejection,” chronicling a chaotic 72-hour period in Modigliani’s life, set against the backdrop of a Paris torn apart by World War I.

The festival also added Lumière!, l’aventure continue (Lumiere! The Adventure Continues) by Thierry Frémaux to its Special Screenings. Additionally, the event will feature Bagger Drama, the second feature by Piet Baumgartner, and Min Evige Sommer (My Eternal Summer), the debut film from Sylvia Le Fanu, both in the New Directors section.

This year’s San Sebastian Film Festival will also honor Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett with the Donostia Award.

New films from renowned directors such as Mike Leigh, François Ozon, Edward Berger, Joshua Oppenheimer, and Costa-Gavras are set to compete for the Golden Shell at the festival, which runs from September 20 to 28.
