Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton dazzle at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door,” a film that explores the complexities of female friendship and end-of-life choices.
Bollywood Fever: The red carpet at the Venice Film Festival continued to sizzle with star power on Monday as the festival welcomed a fresh wave of fashionable actors and directors.
Leading the charge were Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, stars of The Room Next Door, who turned heads alongside their director, Pedro Almodóvar.
The acclaimed Spanish filmmaker made a bold entrance in a bright pink suit, following his leading ladies, who each made their own stunning fashion statements.
Julianne Moore dazzled in a show-stopping chartreuse sequin gown, while Tilda Swinton opted for a dramatic monochromatic look in gray Chanel Couture.
The Room Next Door is an adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s 2020 novel What Are You Going Through. The film tells the story of Ingrid (Moore), a best-selling writer, and Martha (Swinton), who rekindle their friendship after years apart.
As they reconnect, Martha, who is battling terminal cervical cancer, reveals her plan to die with dignity and asks Ingrid to be in the next room when she takes a euthanasia pill.
Earlier in the day, the trio appeared at the film’s official press conference. Moore, a veteran of European film festivals like Cannes, chose an ankle-length red and black Bottega Veneta dress, while Swinton continued her monochromatic streak with a silk shirt, jacket, and trousers by Delpozo.
Swinton’s choice of a Spanish designer seemed particularly fitting as they promoted a film by one of Spain’s most iconic auteurs.
At the press conference, Moore praised Almodóvar for centering the film on a theme that is rarely portrayed on the big screen: female friendship. “What is so compelling about this film and the lens that Pedro puts on this relationship is that not only do we have a mother and daughter story, which we see often in literature and film, but we very rarely see a story about female friendship, especially among older women,” she said. “The fact that he chose to portray this relationship, to elevate it, to show us the love story that it is, I think, is truly extraordinary.”
Swinton also shared her thoughts on the film’s exploration of end-of-life choices. “I’m personally not frightened of death and I have never been,” she explained. “One of the things this film portrays is self-determination—someone who decides to take her life, her living, and her dying into her own hands.”
In his review, The Hollywood Reporter’s chief film critic, David Rooney, described the film as “a mixed bag that eventually delivers,” noting that the “melodrama and theatricality” are subdued, resulting in “a very measured drama about life, death, and the responsibilities of friendship.”
He added that without the talent of the two lead actors, the film might not have succeeded at all.
As the Venice Film Festival rolls on, Moore, Swinton, and Almodóvar have certainly made their mark, with The Room Next Door already generating buzz for its heartfelt and thought-provoking narrative.
