As closing arguments begin, jurors will decide whether former Las Vegas politician Robert Telles is guilty of the murder of journalist Jeff German. Telles claims innocence and a conspiracy against him.

Bollywood Fever: The trial of former Las Vegas-area Democratic politician Robert Telles is drawing to a close, with jurors set to hear final arguments on Monday.

Telles, who has been accused of murdering investigative journalist Jeff German, took the stand to deny the charges, claiming he was the victim of a massive conspiracy.

Telles, 47, faces life in prison if convicted of the brutal killing of German, 69, a respected reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

German had been working on a story about alleged misconduct in Telles’ office, including a romantic relationship Telles had with a female employee—an allegation Telles admitted to for the first time during the trial.

Prosecutors argue that Telles plotted the murder in response to the damaging reports.

Throughout the trial, Telles maintained his innocence, asserting that DNA evidence linking him to the crime was planted and that he was being framed by various individuals and entities, including former colleagues and law enforcement officials. “I didn’t kill Mr. German, and I’m innocent,” Telles told the jury, insisting that he was not the type of person who could commit such a heinous act.

Jurors have been presented with substantial evidence, including video footage showing a vehicle similar to Telles’ maroon SUV in German’s neighborhood around the time of the murder, and DNA from Telles found under German’s fingernails.

Telles argued that the DNA was planted and pointed to what he described as a broad conspiracy against him.

During the trial, Telles attempted to cast doubt on the prosecution’s narrative, but his testimony often veered into rambling denials and accusations.

The jury will now have to weigh the evidence and Telles’ claims as they prepare to deliberate his fate.

German, a veteran journalist known for his coverage of crime, courts, and corruption, was the only journalist killed in the U.S. in 2022.

His death has drawn widespread attention and highlighted the risks faced by reporters investigating powerful figures.

As the jury prepares to deliberate, the question remains whether they will believe Telles’ assertions of a conspiracy or find him guilty of the murder of Jeff German.

The outcome will determine whether Telles spends the rest of his life in prison.
