Katy Perry, alongside fiancé Orlando Bloom, enjoys a sunny beach day in St Tropez amid the controversial release of her new single ‘Woman’s World’. Critics have harshly reviewed the song and its video.
Bollywood Fever: Katy Perry looked stunning as she enjoyed a sun-soaked beach day in St Tropez with her fiancé Orlando Bloom this week, amidst the tumultuous release of her comeback single, “Woman’s World.” The 39-year-old “Teenage Dream” singer, who has defended the single’s provocative music video as “slapstick,” seemed unbothered by its disappointing chart performance.
Perry showcased her toned physique in a stylish gingham bikini, accessorized with gold jewelry and chic shades, while Bloom, 47, flaunted his muscular frame in a tight blue top and shorts. The couple, accompanied by their four-year-old daughter Daisy, shared affectionate moments in the surf, momentarily distancing themselves from the backlash surrounding Perry’s latest track.
Released on Thursday, July 11, “Woman’s World” has struggled on the US iTunes chart, plummeting to number 31 and being outperformed by songs from Eminem and Tom MacDonald. The track, the lead single from Perry’s forthcoming seventh studio album “143,” has faced criticism for being unoriginal and hypocritical, with its sexualized music video drawing particular ire.
In the video, Perry and her dancers perform sultry choreography on a construction site before Perry is “smashed” by an anvil and reappears in a new costume. Describing the video, Perry said, “We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it. It’s very slapstick and very on the nose.”
She elaborated on the video’s theme, saying, “With this set it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we really are about the male gaze.’ And we’re really overplaying it and on the nose.”
Perry explained that the anvil moment was intended as a “reset” to help her embrace the “idea of feminine divine.” She added, “We wanted to open this video making it look like a super high-gloss pop star video.”
“Woman’s World” is the first single from Perry’s upcoming album “143,” set for release on September 20. The album’s title refers to the pager code for “I love you,” a nod to 1990s messaging culture. This will be Perry’s first album since 2020’s “Smile,” which did not achieve the success of her earlier works.
The release of “Woman’s World” has been met with harsh criticism. Pitchfork’s Shaad D’Souza described the single as a “monumental catastrophe” and suggested it sounded like Perry had learned about feminism from a basic Google search. The review also condemned Perry for collaborating with Dr. Luke, a producer accused of sexual assault by Kesha, calling it “sincerely twisted, if unsurprising.”
The Guardian’s one-star review accused the song of being “reheated Gaga” and blatantly borrowing from Chappell Roan’s “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.” Dazed’s Alim Kheraj criticized the song as designed by a committee aiming for a sync on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” with “lyrics that genuinely felt AI generated.”
Mary Siroky’s review for Consequence Of Sound echoed these sentiments, noting that the song “falls as flat as the bottom of the anvil that crushes Perry halfway through the music video.”
Despite the backlash, Perry and Bloom appeared to be enjoying their holiday, brushing off the controversy as they made the most of their time in St Tropez. As Perry continues to promote “Woman’s World,” fans and critics alike will be watching to see how her new album fares upon its release.
