Katy Perry has announced that the forthcoming 22nd season of American Idol will mark her departure from the show.
During her appearance on Monday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, host Jimmy Kimmel directly inquired about Perry’s future on Idol, a role she’s held alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan since the show’s revival by ABC in 2018.
Responding to Kimmel’s question, Perry mentioned her upcoming performance at the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil this September, expressing her excitement for the event and its significance to her Brazilian fans. She then hinted, “So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol.
Amidst gasps from the audience, Perry, who has served as a judge for seven seasons, shared her deep affection for Idol. However, she conveyed a desire to follow her own artistic rhythm, hinting at potential new music releases and a potential world tour.
When Kimmel inquired about her fellow Idol judges’ reactions to her decision, Perry teasingly replied, “Well, they’ll find out tonight!”
