Spanish authorities investigate Katy Perry after she allegedly filmed parts of her “LIFETIMES” music video without proper authorization on the ecologically sensitive Balearic Islands.
Bollywood Fever: Katy Perry is facing an investigation by Spanish authorities after filming her latest music video, “LIFETIMES,” on the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The video, which features Perry dancing against the scenic backdrop of the Balearic Islands and partying in local nightclubs, has drawn scrutiny over allegations that some scenes were filmed in areas without proper authorization.
Local government officials issued a press release on Tuesday, indicating that parts of the video were filmed in S’Espalmador, an uninhabited island known for its ecologically valuable sand dunes. While the Spanish government permits filming and photography in such areas with proper authorization, the production company responsible for the video, WeOwnTheCity, reportedly did not obtain the necessary permits.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Spanish authorities clarified that Perry is not being accused of a “crime against the environment.” Representatives for Katy Perry and WeOwnTheCity have yet to comment on the matter, and TIME has reached out to the local authorities for further details.
This investigation is the latest challenge in the rollout of Perry’s seventh studio album, 143. The album’s first single, “Woman’s World,” received mixed reviews, with critics arguing that the music video, despite its feminist lyrics, catered to the male gaze. In response to the criticism, Perry explained in a behind-the-scenes clip that the video was meant to be “fun and a bit sarcastic,” embracing a slapstick, on-the-nose style.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this latest setback will impact Perry’s album launch and public image.
