Kelsey Plum Faces Heat from Coach Becky Hammon as Aces Fall to Liberty in WNBA Playoffs

Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum receives criticism from coach Becky Hammon during the team’s second straight playoff loss to the New York Liberty, as tensions rise ahead of Game 3.

BollywoodFever: Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum found herself in the spotlight after a tense exchange with head coach Becky Hammon during the team’s second consecutive loss to the New York Liberty in their playoff series. The heated moment occurred during a timeout in Game 2 on Tuesday, October 1, where Hammon, 47, was seen pointing her finger at Plum, 30, in a video that quickly went viral. The Aces, reigning WNBA champions, lost 88-84, falling behind 2-0 in the best-of-five series.

Plum, who struggled offensively with just six points on 2-of-9 shooting in 27 minutes, was the target of Hammon’s frustration. While it’s unclear what Hammon specifically said during the timeout, her postgame comments revealed her dissatisfaction with the team’s focus and effort.

“Quite frankly, we haven’t had the edge all year,” Hammon told reporters. “This is why three-peating is hard, let’s be real.”

No team has won three straight WNBA titles since the Houston Comets achieved the feat from 1997 to 2000. Hammon expressed concerns about her players being distracted by off-the-court pursuits following their championship win last season, saying, “The whole league has been pissed off for the last eight months and my players are in commercials and being freaking celebrities. You get distracted.”

Hammon also criticized the Aces’ turnovers in Game 2, with Plum tying for the team-high in giveaways with three. “They had 20 points at halftime off our turnovers,” Hammon said. “Looked like a lay-up clinic.”

This isn’t the first contentious moment for Plum in the series. During Game 1 on September 29, Plum had a playful exchange with famed director Spike Lee, who was courtside at Madison Square Garden. The interaction went viral, but Plum downplayed it, saying, “It was all well and fun.”

As the series heads to Las Vegas for Game 3 on Friday, October 4, the Aces will need to refocus if they hope to turn the series around.
