Career Of R’Bonney Gabriel
The 28-year-old made history back in December 2021 as the first Filipina-American to win Miss Texas USA.
She had been modeling for six years before joining the Miss Universe Organization.
Close to a year later, Gabriel was crowned Miss USA in October 2022, succeeding Miss Kentucky Elle Smith, who was named Miss USA in 2021.
Following her win, Gabriel told Houston Life: “Oh my God, it’s an honor. I’m getting messages on Instagram and just social media of Filipina girls and women telling me they’re so excited, they’re so happy.
“They’re crying tears of joy because they are inspired to go after pageantry or something,” she added. “Like I’m paving the way for them to just go after whatever they want no matter what it is. So it’s an honor.”
Gabriel will be representing the United States in the 2023 Miss Universe pageant on Saturday, January 14, in New Orleans.
- Her first foray into pageantry was when she joined Miss Kemah USA 2020, where she placed among the Top 5 finalists.
- She competed at Miss Texas USA 2021 as Miss Harris County and placed as first runner-up to Victoria Hinojosa of McAllen.
- As Miss Friendswood, Gabriel competed again in Miss Texas USA 2022, where she was eventually crowned by outgoing titleholder Victoria Hinojosa, becoming the first Asian-American Miss Texas USA, less than a week after fellow Asian-American Averie Bishop crowned Miss Texas 2022, who is also of Filipino descent.
Winning Miss Texas USA 2022 earned her the right to represent Texas at Miss USA 2022, where she eventually bagged the Best State Costume award. She roomed with Miss Wyoming USA, Morgan McNally, while at the pageant. She advanced to all rounds, including the swimsuit and evening gown portions, and then entered the Top 5.
At the Top 5 Question and Answer portion, she picked the judge Soo Yeon Lee, who asked her the question: “Global studies indicate that women are increasingly seen as more vulnerable to the impact of climate change. You are asked to create a task force to help address this issue. What’s your first priority?,” to which she responded:
Well, I think there’s eight ways we can implement addressing climate change within our careers or our lifestyle. It’s as easy as adding a recycle bin to your house, everybody can do that, or being creative in ways you can also implement it in your job. I am a fashion designer. I actually made the outfit I’m wearing and I upcycle pieces and recycle different clothing to be more sustainable in my industry because I feel like it’s my duty. So I think that’s something we can all look for in our certain industries and in our homes — to be more sustainable.
At the end of the event, she was crowned as Miss USA 2022 by outgoing titleholder, Miss USA 2021, Elle Smith of Kentucky, becoming the first Miss USA of Filipino descent.
