Kylian Mbappe reportedly agreed to join Liverpool in 2022, but PSG blocked the £168M transfer bid, curtailing the move. The French star later joined Real Madrid in 2023.
Bollywood Fever: Kylian Mbappe reportedly agreed to join Liverpool two years ago, only for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to block the move by rejecting a £168 million bid.
The French forward, who joined Real Madrid this summer, had found himself at a crossroads in 2022, with Liverpool and Real Madrid showing strong interest as his future at PSG hung in the balance.
During the summer of 2022, as Mbappe and PSG were in tense discussions over his future, Liverpool seemed to have a real chance at landing the star.
According to L’Equipe, Mbappe agreed on personal terms with the Reds, and the club made a record-breaking £168 million bid. However, PSG were looking for double that amount, which halted Mbappe’s potential switch to Anfield.
Instead of moving to Liverpool, Mbappe agreed to a new two-year deal with PSG, with an option for a third year, securing a large signing bonus and more influence within the club.
Despite this, his relationship with PSG remained strained, especially when he expressed his intent to run down his contract, which angered the club’s hierarchy.
PSG attempted to broker a transfer deal with a Saudi Arabian club, but Mbappe stayed at the Parc des Princes, adding more domestic honors to his collection but missing out on the Champions League.
Before joining Real Madrid, Liverpool had been linked with Mbappe throughout Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, even though such a signing would have been unprecedented for the club.
Liverpool typically focuses on signing players for more modest fees and developing them. Despite the hefty £168 million bid, Klopp had previously downplayed the financial feasibility of a move for Mbappe.
Klopp once told Sky Germany: “I can say that I think he’s a really good player, but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story… but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.” He also expressed skepticism about any club being able to meet the French star’s wage demands and signing bonuses.
Real Madrid ultimately secured Mbappe’s services this summer, where he will earn £12.8 million per year after tax.
