Lille shocks Real Madrid with a 1-0 win in the Champions League, ending the holders’ 14-game unbeaten run as Jonathan David converts a decisive penalty.

BollywoodFever: A first-half penalty by Jonathan David secured Lille a stunning 1-0 home victory over reigning champions Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday. This result ended Real Madrid’s impressive 14-game unbeaten run in the competition and marked their first defeat since January, breaking a streak of 36 matches without a loss across all competitions.

David’s penalty came three minutes into first-half stoppage time after Eduardo Camavinga handled Edon Zhegrova’s free kick, with the Canadian striker coolly converting from the spot. The victory puts Ligue 1 side Lille on three points from two games in the revamped Champions League format, level with Real Madrid, who had won their opening match against VfB Stuttgart.

Reflecting on his decisive goal, David said, “On the penalty, I try to focus, to keep calm to take a good shot but I’m confident when it comes to taking penalties. It has not sunk in yet but it’s a memorable night.”

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin acknowledged his team’s lack of intensity. “It’s difficult to analyze right after. (We lacked) aggression, creativity, in the end, what we always have,” he said. We want to win because we know what colors we’re playing in. But that’s OK. Courage, keep working and prepare for the next game.”

Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti started the match with Kylian Mbappé on the bench, as the French captain was recovering from a muscle injury. The visitors had early chances, with Vinicius Jr. and young striker Endrick testing Lille’s defense, but Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was up to the challenge.

Lille’s persistent attacks finally paid off in the first half, with David coming close before his eventual penalty conversion. Despite Real Madrid’s late pressure, especially after Ancelotti introduced Mbappé and Luka Modric, Lille held on to claim a memorable win.
