Los Angeles to Pay $9.5 Million Settlement in Fatal Trader Joe’s Shooting Case

Los Angeles agrees to a $9.5 million settlement with the family of Melyda Corado, who was fatally shot by police during a 2018 Trader Joe’s shootout.

Bollywood Fever: The city of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $9.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of Melyda Corado, a woman tragically killed by police gunfire during a shootout at a Trader Joe’s store in 2018.

The settlement, announced by the family’s attorneys on Friday, marks the resolution of a legal battle that began nearly six years ago.

Corado, 27, was an assistant manager at the Trader Joe’s in the Silver Lake neighborhood when the incident occurred on July 21, 2018.

On that day, a gunman, fleeing from police after shooting his grandmother and kidnapping his girlfriend, entered the store and engaged in a shootout with pursuing officers.

In the chaos, Corado was struck and killed by police gunfire, becoming an unintended victim of the crossfire.

Following her death, Corado’s father and brother filed a lawsuit in November 2018, alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death.

They argued that her death could have been prevented if the officers involved had adhered to their training and considered the safety of bystanders before using deadly force.

“Officers must look at the dangers posed to bystanders when using deadly force, and the officers here failed to do that,” said Neil Gehlawat, an attorney representing Corado’s family, in a statement.

Despite the settlement, the Los Angeles Police Commission previously determined that the officer who fired the fatal shot did not violate department policy.

A report concluded that the officers acted reasonably under the circumstances, as they believed the gunman posed an immediate threat of injury or death to those in the vicinity.

The City Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the settlement on Friday.

The gunman, who had taken dozens of people hostage inside the store, eventually surrendered to the authorities.

The tragic incident continues to raise questions about police use of force and the protocols in place to protect innocent bystanders during such confrontations.
