A large forest fire on Portugal’s Madeira island has been brought under control after 11 days, but firefighters stay on the ground to prevent flare-ups.

Bollywood Fever: Firefighters have successfully brought a large forest fire under control on the Portuguese island of Madeira after it burned for 11 days, consuming over 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres) of vegetation.

Despite the fire being under control, authorities remain on high alert to prevent potential reignitions, according to regional civil protection commander Antonio Nunes.

The fire, which began on August 14, primarily affected mountainous areas where the steep slopes and difficult access complicated firefighting efforts.

Adverse weather conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity, further hampered attempts to contain the blaze.

European Union authorities provided two Canadair planes to assist in battling the flames.

Fortunately, the regional government reported no injuries, no homes destroyed, and no damage to essential infrastructure.

Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal with a population of around 250,000, is a popular tourist destination.

The recent fire highlights the increasing frequency of wildfires worldwide, a trend linked to rising global temperatures due to climate change

These fires have become more common in regions across southern and eastern Europe, North America, and parts of Asia.

As the situation stabilizes, firefighting teams will continue to monitor the area closely to prevent any resurgence of the fire, ensuring the safety of the island’s residents and preserving its natural beauty.
