Deobra Redden pleads guilty but mentally ill after attacking Judge Holthus in court. His lawyers request mental health treatment as part of his sentencing.
Bollywood Fever: Deobra Redden, the man caught on video attacking a judge during his attempted battery conviction, has pled guilty but mentally ill, his legal team at CEGA Law Group announced.
Redden’s attorneys released a statement on Friday acknowledging the seriousness of his actions while advocating for mental health treatment as part of his sentencing.
Redden’s lawyers expressed their client’s understanding of the gravity of the situation and emphasized his need for help with mental health issues.
They hope this case will raise awareness about mental health reform and its importance in the justice system.
The attack occurred when Redden leaped over the raised judge’s bench at Judge Mary Kay Holthus as she was delivering his sentence in an earlier conviction.
Holthus had commented that Redden needed “a taste of something else,” which seemed to trigger his reaction. Though Judge Holthus hit her head, she was largely unharmed as Redden was quickly restrained.
Following the incident, Redden appeared in court days later with additional restraints, including a facemask and hand coverings.
He was sentenced to 19-48 months behind bars for attempted battery. His sentencing for the attack on Judge Holthus is scheduled for November 7.
Redden’s attorneys expressed sympathy for Judge Holthus and thanked the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for their willingness to negotiate terms that focus on mental health treatment.
