Maria Branyas, the world’s oldest person at 117, has passed away peacefully in a Spanish nursing home. Her remarkable life spanned two pandemics and the Spanish Civil War.

Bollywood Fever: Maria Branyas, recognized as the world’s oldest person, passed away peacefully at the age of 117 in a Spanish nursing home. Her death was confirmed on Tuesday by both her official X account and a spokesperson from the nursing home.

“Maria Branyas has left us. She has died as she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain,” her X account, managed by her daughter, shared. The nursing home spokesperson confirmed the news but did not provide further details.

Branyas had hinted at her impending death on Monday, posting on X, “I feel weak. The time is coming. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears… You know me, wherever I go, I will be happy.”

Born in San Francisco, California, in 1907, Branyas moved to Catalonia, Spain, with her family when she was seven years old. She lived through some of the most significant events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War and two global pandemics—the 1918 Spanish flu and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1931, Branyas married Catalan doctor Joan Moret, with whom she had three children. Her husband passed away in 1976, and she outlived her son, August, who tragically died in a tractor accident at the age of 86.

Branyas became the world’s oldest person in January 2023, according to Guinness World Records. She celebrated her 117th birthday on March 4 of this year, becoming the 12th oldest verified person in history. She attributed her exceptional longevity to a combination of luck, good genetics, and a lifestyle characterized by “order, tranquillity, good connections with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people.”

Her legacy of resilience and positivity leaves an indelible mark on history. The title of the oldest person ever recorded still belongs to Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122 years and 164 days old.
