Martin Demichelis will step down as coach of River Plate after a year and a half in the position, following a series of disappointing results, the popular Argentine soccer club announced on Saturday.
In a statement on social media platform X, Club Atletico River Plate said, “As a result of a decision taken in agreement with the club’s top authorities, Martin Demichelis has left his position as coach of the professional squad.”
River Plate, one of Argentina’s most popular soccer clubs and Boca Juniors’ archrivals, revealed that Demichelis, 43, will coach the team for the last time on Sunday in a home game against Sarmiento de Junin in the Primera Division.
Demichelis took over from Marcelo Gallardo in 2022 after Gallardo stepped down following nearly nine years in the role, during which he won the most titles in the club’s history. During his 18-month tenure, Demichelis led River Plate to three titles in 86 games. However, the current championship has seen the team win just one of five matches, despite leading the standings with 27 points.
Local media reported that the team’s recent record has failed to impress the club’s passionate fans, known as “los millonarios” (the millionaires).
“River Plate thanks Demichelis for his enormous professionalism, commitment, and respect for our shirt, and the three titles won,” the club added.
