A devastating explosion at Escientia Advanced Sciences in Andhra Pradesh’s Atchutapuram SEZ leaves 16 dead and 30 injured. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials investigate the cause.

India, Bollywood Fever: A catastrophic explosion at a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district on Wednesday claimed the lives of at least 16 workers and injured 30 others. The blast occurred at Escientia Advanced Sciences Private Limited, located in the Atchutapuram special economic zone (SEZ), during the workers’ lunch break.

State Labour Minister Vasamsetty Subhash confirmed the incident, revealing that the explosion happened in a reactor within the facility. Among the 16 deceased, 10 have been identified, including key personnel like Assistant General Manager V. Sanyasi Naidu and Laboratory In-Charge Rami Reddy.

Subhash noted that the rescue operations are being hampered by thick smoke, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach all affected areas quickly. Authorities are still working to identify the remaining victims, with ongoing efforts to control the situation.

Atchutapuram Police Inspector M. Buchaiah stated that a First Information Report (FIR) will be filed soon, while Anakapalli Superintendent of Police M. Deepika mentioned that the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. The blast led to a fire that gutted the entire factory, trapping several workers inside. The explosion also caused the collapse of the first-floor slab, potentially trapping more workers under the debris.

Local residents were alarmed by the loud noise from the explosion, which sent thick smoke billowing into the air. Fire brigades were dispatched immediately, with 11 engines eventually deployed to extinguish the flames.

Anakapalli District Collector Vijaya Krishnan confirmed that the explosion occurred at 2:15 pm, noting that the factory operates with 381 employees across two shifts. Due to the timing of the explosion during lunch, many workers were not in the immediate vicinity, potentially reducing the number of casualties.

Approximately 30 workers suffered burn injuries and were rushed to the NTR District Hospital in Anakapalli, while others were transferred to hospitals in Visakhapatnam, about 20 kilometers away.

Escientia Advanced Sciences, which manufactures intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), began operations in April 2019 with an investment of ₹200 crore. The company is headquartered in South Windsor, Connecticut, USA, and operates additional R&D centers in Connecticut and Hyderabad.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock over the tragedy and reached out to local authorities for updates. He urged officials to take all necessary measures to prevent further loss of life and assured that the government would support the families of the deceased.

This incident is the latest in a series of industrial accidents in the Atchutapuram SEZ. Just a month ago, a worker died, and two others were injured in an explosion at Vasanth Chemicals. In June 2023, another chemical reactor blast at Sahiti Pharma claimed six lives.

The recurring accidents have raised concerns over safety protocols in the region’s industrial facilities, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
