Classic Delight recalls 25 sandwich products across multiple states over listeria contamination concerns. No illnesses reported, but FDA urges caution.

California (Bollywood Fever): Dozens of pre-made sandwiches are being recalled across the United States due to potential listeria contamination. On Monday, the FDA announced that Classic Delight is recalling 25 products distributed to Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. These products include individually wrapped ham and cheese sandwiches, chili hot dogs, cheeseburgers, biscuits, pancakes, and chicken and waffles, produced between May 11, 2023, and June 6, 2024.

The recalled items may still be in circulation among distribution companies that supply schools, businesses, convenience and grocery stores, and vending machine companies. The recall was triggered after samples tested positive for listeria, and the Ohio-based company is collaborating with the USDA to manage the recall. Production has been halted as the company and government agencies investigate the source of contamination. No illnesses related to the recall have been reported to the FDA.

Listeria is typically contracted by consuming food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. While most people who consume contaminated food will not become seriously ill, severe infections can lead to confusion, seizures, miscarriages in pregnant women, and even death if the infection spreads beyond the gut to the central nervous system. Vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and pregnant women, are more susceptible to severe infections. The CDC estimates that 1,600 Americans contract listeria annually, with approximately 260 fatalities.

This recall by Classic Delight marks the second listeria-related recall in 2024. In February, the CDC alerted Americans to a listeria outbreak linked to dairy products nationwide. Contaminated cheese, crema, and yogurt produced by Rizo-Lopez Foods were voluntarily recalled, affecting major supermarket chains such as Food City and Whole Foods. The outbreak resulted in 26 illnesses and 23 hospitalizations across 11 states, with two reported deaths in California and Texas.
