Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador accuses the U.S. of interference following criticism of a judicial reform by Ambassador Ken Salazar, while maintaining that relations with the U.S. remain amicable.
Bollywood Fever: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday confirmed suspicions that the United States may be using its ambassador to meddle in Mexico’s domestic affairs.
During a morning press conference, Lopez Obrador responded “yes” when asked if he believed the U.S. was interfering, a sentiment sparked by recent remarks from U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar.
Last Thursday, Salazar criticized a proposed judicial reform in Mexico that would see judges elected by popular vote, labeling it a threat to Mexican democracy.
He warned that the reform could expose the judiciary to the influence of organized crime and jeopardize the trade relationship between the United States and Mexico.
Lopez Obrador had previously condemned Salazar’s comments as “interventionist,” and on Monday, he reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty of nations.
Despite the tension, he assured that relations with both Ambassador Salazar and U.S. President Joe Biden remain friendly.
He emphasized that there is nothing “rational” that could disrupt the strong trade ties between the two countries.
The United States and Mexico are each other’s top trading partners, with trade relations deepening as the U.S. increasingly shifts its supply chains from China to Mexico.
This economic interdependence underscores the significance of maintaining amicable diplomatic relations, despite disagreements over domestic policies.
Lopez Obrador’s stance highlights the delicate balance between defending national sovereignty and maintaining crucial international partnerships, especially in the context of the deeply intertwined U.S.-Mexico trade relationship.
