Myanmar’s flooding death toll has climbed to 74 as heavy rains from Typhoon Yagi cause widespread devastation. Search and rescue efforts continue amid challenges from damaged infrastructure.
BollywoodFever: The death toll from severe flooding in Myanmar has risen to 74, with 89 people still missing as of Friday evening, according to a report from state media on Sunday.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains brought on by Typhoon Yagi, have wreaked havoc across the war-torn country since Monday.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, but efforts have been hampered by damaged infrastructure and downed phone and internet lines.
Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, has also caused hundreds of deaths in Vietnam and Thailand, with floodwaters inundating cities across both nations.
The flooding in Myanmar has primarily affected central regions such as Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Magway, and Bago, as well as Shan, Mon, Kayah, and Kayin states, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The report indicates that rivers and creeks flowing down from the Shan hills have worsened the situation in central Myanmar.
State media confirmed that five dams, four pagodas, and over 65,000 houses have been destroyed due to the flooding, adding to the devastation.
The country has been in turmoil since a military coup in February 2021, with large parts of the nation engulfed in violence, complicating humanitarian efforts.
About one-third of Myanmar’s 55 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, but access restrictions and security risks have prevented many aid agencies, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, from operating in affected areas.
