Mychal Thompson praises Caitlin Clark as a potential WNBA MVP, adding fuel to the Rookie of the Year debate between Clark and Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese.
Bollywood Fever: While discourse surrounding Caitlin Clark has at times reached toxic levels, NBA veteran Mychal Thompson brought a positive yet controversial spin to the conversation by touting the Indiana Fever rookie as a legitimate MVP candidate.Â
The two-time NBA champion and father of Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson posted a glowing review of Clark’s season on social media—but perhaps went a little too far in his excitement.
“Lemmy see if I got this strait…” Thompson began. “Best Gard in the WNBA…Leeds leeg in points scored/assisted…Has taken the WORST team in the leeg to solid PLAYOFF contender…Leeds leeg in assists…and then there’s this…Game attendance avrage WITH Caitlin? 15,000…NO Caitlin? 8,000. Thats MVP 2 ME.”
Thompson’s praise highlighted the transformative impact Clark has had on the Fever and the WNBA as a whole.
Despite being a rookie, she’s leading in several statistical categories, including points and assists, while also boosting game attendance significantly.
However, the MVP talk may be a stretch, especially with A’Ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces currently the overwhelming favorite to win the 2024 WNBA MVP award.
The WNBA Rookie of the Year race has also generated controversy, with Clark’s impressive stats putting her ahead in many categories.
However, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese has garnered attention due to her record-setting rebounding numbers, leading some media figures and former players—like Lisa Leslie—to suggest a shared award between Clark and Reese.
While Mychal Thompson’s argument for Clark’s MVP candidacy is compelling, especially considering her role in turning around a struggling Fever team, it may be a bit premature given Wilson’s dominant season.
Nonetheless, his comments have reignited the conversation around Clark’s impact on the WNBA and her potential to be an all-time great.
As the season progresses, the debate over Rookie of the Year and MVP honors will only intensify, but Clark’s influence—on and off the court—continues to be undeniable.
