Navdeep Singh claims gold at the Paris Paralympics in men’s javelin throw F41 after a disqualification, securing India’s 29th medal in a historic performance.
Bollywood Fever: Navdeep Singh, who narrowly missed a podium finish at the Tokyo Paralympics, made a triumphant comeback at the Paris Paralympics 2024, winning gold in the men’s javelin throw F41, a classification for athletes of short stature.
Singh’s dramatic victory came after Iran’s Sajdegh Sayah Beit, initially declared the winner, was disqualified for ‘unsporting/improper conduct’ due to displaying a non-state flag, in violation of Paralympic rules.
Navdeep’s best throw of 47.32m initially earned him a silver medal, but Beit’s disqualification upgraded Singh to gold.
China’s defending champion Sun Pengxiang was bumped up to silver, while Iraq’s Wildan Nukhailawi, the bronze medallist from Tokyo, took the bronze once again.
This victory marks an incredible journey for the 23-year-old, who was not always interested in the javelin throw.
Inspired by para-athlete Sandeep Chaudhary in 2017, Navdeep switched from wrestling to javelin, despite the challenge of hurling a 7-foot javelin at just 4 feet 4 inches tall.
Navdeep’s breakthrough moment came with his second throw in the Paris final, a personal best of 46.39m.
He followed that up with a stunning 47.32m throw, setting a Paralympic record and ensuring a medal finish.
The win, which came in a field featuring all the Tokyo medallists, showed Navdeep’s determination and growth since his fourth-place finish in 2021.
This gold marks India’s 29th medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024, surpassing pre-Games expectations and solidifying India’s place among the top-performing nations at the event.
