Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe Biopic Gets Rare NC-17 Rating for Sexual Content

Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic is officially rated with the NC-17 grade.

Blonde, the film, which features Ana de Armas as the famous model and actress, was given the only rating reserved for adults in the category of “some sexual content” by the Motion Picture Association on Wednesday.

Director Andrew Dominik previously predicted the film, an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel.

It will be an NC-17 film, and he swore it off, saying to Screen Daily in February: “It’s a demanding movie. If the viewers don’t enjoy it, that’s the audience’s problem.

The film isn’t running to be a public official. It’s an NC-17 film featuring Marilyn Monroe; it’s what you’re looking for, isn’t it? I’d like to go experience this movie. NC-17 versions that tells the Marilyn Monroe story.”

The director also stated that Netflix “insisted” on hiring editor Jennifer Lame ( Tenet) “to curb the excesses of the movie,” which also includes an alleged rape that was also included in Oates the book.

Oates The acclaimed novel of 2000 is a 700-page fictitious version of Monroe’s life that The New Yorkeronce described as “the definitive study of American celebrity.”

Netflix has previously streamed NC-17 films made from other companies (such in 2013’s Blue is the most warm color) However, Blonde is believed to be the first production by Netflix to earn the”hard-core” rating.

Dominik has expressed gratitude for the help of Netflix, stating, “It’s much easier to be supportive of something if you like it. It’s more difficult to support something you don’t. I am grateful in the end towards Netflix.”

Blondeco-stars Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson.

The film was initially thought to be released in May, without competition at Cannes but it appears that it’s not scheduled to premiere at the festival.

Should Blonde will be released in theaters before going to streaming it could cause problems for some cinemas who were not willing to screen films with this label in previous years.

But, Netflix frequently relies upon smaller independent chains that might not be able to overcome the same issues which is why it’s not so significant as it would be when it was an important studio release that relies on a large break.

In any event, Netflix has not officially made any announcements regarding a release schedule or release date yet.
