Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is thrilled to see Sandro Tonali back in action for Italy after serving a 10-month ban, as the team prepares for a tough run of away games.
BollywoodFever: Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at seeing midfielder Sandro Tonali back in action for Italy after the player served a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules.
Tonali made his return to international football during Italy’s Nations League matches against Israel and France, marking his first appearances for the national team since his suspension by the Italian Football Federation in October last year.
“I was pleased to see him play. He has performed well, and those games would have done him the world of good,” Howe shared in a press conference on Friday.
“It’s the first few steps for him, and we are delighted he is available for us. Sandro has that flair and ability to make the difference. He is a player we absolutely love.
In addition to Tonali, Howe mentioned that all his players who returned from international duty, including Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes, are in good shape.
However, forward Callum Wilson, recovering from a back injury, has not yet rejoined training. “Callum is a little bit behind where we want him to be,” Howe admitted, explaining that Wilson was expected to be ready for upcoming games but is not there yet.
Newcastle, who have accumulated seven points from their last three matches, including a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, are set to visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
Howe emphasized the importance of building momentum but acknowledged the team hasn’t reached their full potential. “Performance-wise, we haven’t hit top gear,” he said. “We have done well in different passages of each game but not consistently throughout the 90 minutes. That’s what we’re looking to do… as we are going into a spell with tough away games.”
