Newcastle United edged out Nottingham Forest 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the League Cup, while AFC Wimbledon stunned Ipswich Town and West Ham ousted Bournemouth.
Bollywood Fever: Newcastle United secured a dramatic 4-3 victory on penalties against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup second round on Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The win ensured Newcastle’s progression to the third round, where they will face AFC Wimbledon, the surprise giant-killers of the round.
The match at the City Ground saw Newcastle take the lead almost immediately, with Alexander Isak’s shot being parried away only for Joe Willock to score on the rebound, netting his first goal since February.
However, Willock’s night was cut short due to a thigh injury. Forest fought back, equalizing five minutes into the second half through Jota Silva’s half-volley.
The game remained deadlocked, leading to a penalty shootout where Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff scored the decisive spot-kick after Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed their efforts.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised his team’s composure under pressure, revealing that they had practiced penalties the day before.
Elsewhere, fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon pulled off a stunning upset by knocking out Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw. Wimbledon’s reward for their heroics is a home tie against Newcastle in the third round.
In other League Cup action, Bournemouth were knocked out by West Ham United, who won 1-0 courtesy of a deflected late goal from Jarrod Bowen.
West Ham will face current holders Liverpool at Anfield in the next round.
Premier League champions Manchester City will host second-tier Watford, while Arsenal face a home match against League One’s Bolton Wanderers.
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were also handed home ties, with United taking on League One’s Barnsley and Spurs traveling to second-tier Coventry City.
Chelsea, last year’s finalists, will host fourth-tier Barrow in what is set to be another exciting round of fixtures.
The second round marked the entry of Premier League clubs not involved in European competitions, with matches for the third round scheduled for the weeks commencing September 16 and 23.
