Nick Castellanos’ walk-off single in the ninth inning powered the Phillies to a thrilling 7-6 win over the Mets, evening the NLDS at 1-1. Read how the game unfolded.
BollywoodFever: Nick Castellanos had a feeling he could deliver the game-winning hit as he stepped up to the plate in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the NL Division Series. With two outs, two runners on, and the score tied, the Philadelphia Phillies slugger faced Mets reliever Tylor Megill with a chance to win the game. Castellanos didn’t miss his opportunity.
On an 1-2 slider, Castellanos ripped a single to left field, sending Trea Turner home and sparking a euphoric celebration at Citizens Bank Park. The 7-6 win evened the series at one game apiece, as Phillies fans erupted into a frenzy.
“I did like that pitch when I saw it,” Castellanos said. “If he blows a fastball by me, so be it. I’d rather that than swing at something in the dirt.”
The game was a rollercoaster for the NL East rivals, with big moments from both sides. Castellanos tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth inning and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth, only for the Mets to tie it again with a two-run blast from Mark Vientos. But it was Castellanos’ heroics that ultimately sealed the victory for Philadelphia.
“This was special,” Castellanos said. “When I’m old and no one cares about me as a baseball player anymore, we’re going to be home and be able to remember and look back at that.”
Bryce Harper, who wore a “Showman” headband and hit a two-run homer earlier in the game, praised the team’s never-die mentality. “Rocky would be proud,” Harper said. “Just a great game.”
The Phillies will now head to New York for Game 3 on Tuesday, looking to build on this momentum as the Mets return to Citi Field for their first home game since late September. Both teams will continue to go “punch for punch,” as Harper put it, in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested series.
