North Korea has issued a stern warning, vowing to “totally destroy” its enemies if leader Kim Jong Un gives the order, according to state media KCNA. The declaration came on Sunday as the nation celebrated the 71st anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

During a meeting attended by Kim Jong Un, senior military officials, including Army Colonel Ri Un Ryong and Navy Lieutenant Commander Yu Kyong Song, voiced their “surging hatred” towards the United States and South Korea. They accused these nations of “being hell-bent on provoking a nuclear war” and pledged to enhance their war capabilities for an “overwhelming attack on the enemy anytime and without delay.”

The tense rhetoric underscores the ongoing hostilities between North Korea and the United States, who do not have diplomatic ties. Efforts to reduce tensions and denuclearize North Korea have been stalled since 2019. North Korean state media recently expressed skepticism that the situation would improve, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

North Korea marked the armistice anniversary, which they refer to as “Victory Day,” with fervent declarations of military readiness. The armistice agreement, signed on July 27, 1953, by North Korea, the United States, and China, ended the hostilities of the three-year Korean War. However, as the agreement was a truce rather than a treaty, North Korea and South Korea remain technically at war.

While North Korea celebrates “Victory Day” with significant events, South Korea does not commemorate the day with major celebrations. The continuing technical state of war keeps tensions high on the Korean Peninsula, with recent declarations from North Korea adding to the strain.

As the international community watches closely, the possibility of renewed diplomatic efforts remains uncertain, especially in the face of North Korea’s persistent and provocative stance.
