Hosted by Ted Danson, Oceana’s annual SeaChange Summer Party raised $1.5 million to support ocean conservation initiatives, with celebrity guests and a special performance by Lisa Loeb.
Bollywood Fever: Oceana, the world’s largest international advocacy organization dedicated to ocean conservation, hosted its annual SeaChange Summer Party on Saturday in Laguna Beach.
This year’s event, hosted by actor and longtime Oceana board member Ted Danson, raised an impressive $1.5 million to support global efforts to protect and restore the world’s oceans.
The SeaChange Summer Party has become a staple fundraising event for Oceana, having raised over $20 million in its 17-year history.
“They are such a dedicated, supportive, generous audience down there—it’s one of our favorite events,” Danson told The Hollywood Reporter.
He noted that the organization often draws significant Hollywood support for the cause, making the event a highlight on the social calendar.
This year’s party honored Valarie Van Cleave, a longtime supporter and co-founder of SeaChange, and featured an address from Oceana’s new CEO, Jim Simon.
Guests were also treated to a private concert by singer Lisa Loeb, adding to the evening’s festivities.
A star-studded guest list included Diane Lane, Oscar Nuñez, Dennis Haysbert, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Sam Trammell, among others.
Oceana used the event to spotlight over 25 major victories achieved in the past year, including convincing Amazon to reduce its use of single-use plastics in North America, securing new habitat protections in various countries, and implementing measures in California to reduce whale and sea turtle entanglements in commercial fishing gear.
Danson, who has been deeply involved with Oceana’s efforts, spoke passionately about the organization’s work, particularly in combating the global plastic crisis. “Plastics is just this huge problem wherever you go, including Southern California,” he said, highlighting Oceana’s collaboration with Amazon to eliminate plastic pillows by the end of 2024.
The actor emphasized that simply improving recycling efforts is not enough to address the plastic pollution issue. “That’s a great marketing slogan for the plastic industry, but it doesn’t work.
It never has,” Danson remarked. He pointed out that only about eight percent of all plastic created has been recycled, and much of that is “down-cycling,” where recycled materials are converted into lower-quality products that eventually become waste themselves.
In addition to his environmental advocacy, Danson shared that he has been working on a Cheers podcast with his former co-star Woody Harrelson.
The podcast allows him to engage in meaningful, in-depth conversations, providing listeners with insights into the lives of the show’s iconic cast members.
Oceana’s SeaChange Summer Party continues to be a crucial event in the fight for ocean conservation, bringing together passionate individuals and celebrities to support a cause that impacts the entire planet.
