Olivia Munn leads tributes to her Violet co-star Erica Ash following Ash’s tragic death from cancer at age 46. Hollywood mourns the loss of a talented and beloved actress.
Olivia Munn has paid a heartfelt tribute to her Violet co-star Erica Ash, who tragically passed away at the age of 46 from cancer in Los Angeles on Sunday.
“So sad to hear about the passing of Erica Ash after a long battle with cancer,” the 44-year-old Hit-Monkey actress wrote Monday over a clip from the 2021 film. “We worked together on the movie Violet that came out in 2021. She was a brilliant actor who brought so much to every moment. Rest in love.”
Olivia (born Lisa) ended her Instagram Story thread with the phrase: “F*** cancer.”
Munn and Ash portrayed Violet and Lila, respectively, in Justine Bateman’s feature directorial debut Violet about quieting the negative voices in your head, which is available on Amazon Prime Video.
The 58-year-old Family Ties alum wrote on Instagram: “Very saddened to hear of the passing of actress Erica Ash. As one of the stars of #VIOLETthefilm, Erica was a classy, dedicated, and talented performer. She was a thoroughbred.”
The half-Chinese beauty revealed on March 13 that she had been diagnosed (via MRI) with luminal B breast cancer back in April 2023, and she’s undergone several surgeries including a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy.
Olivia and her husband – three-time Emmy winner John Mulaney – now have two healthy embryos following her final egg retrieval, which will someday create a sibling for their two-year-old son Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney.
“This journey has made me realize how grateful I am to have options for not only fighting cancer, but also having more children if we want,” Munn told Vogue in May. “Because I know a lot of people don’t have those options.”
Erica is survived by her mother Diann Phillips Ash, sister Adrienne Nichole Ash, father Donald Ash, brother Donald B. Ash, brother Derrick Ash, as well as her dogs Toa and Tao.
“After a long and courageous battle with cancer, she transitioned peacefully surrounded by her loved ones,” Diann told TMZ on Monday. “Erica was an amazing woman and talented entertainer who touched countless lives with her sharp wit, humor, and genuine zest for life. Her memory will live eternally in our hearts. In honor of Erica’s memory, the family asks that any donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation or the Breast Cancer Foundation of your choice. We are grateful for the kind expressions of love and support during this difficult time.”
The MADtv alum made her final appearance as Jon Cryer’s onscreen date Lydia in the January 23rd episode – titled The Consequences of Matchmaking – of his NBC sitcom Extended Family. Ash also appeared in films like Scary Movie 5, Outlaw Johnny Black, and We Have a Ghost as well as TV shows like Real Husbands of Hollywood, Survivor’s Remorse, In Contempt, and Legacies.
Other celebrities to pay tribute to the self-described “naughty tomboy” on Monday included Jamie Foxx, Loni Love, Niecy Nash Betts, Michael Jai White, Tisha Campbell-Martin, and Mike Epps.
Erica Ash will be remembered for her incredible talent, vibrant spirit, and the joy she brought to her roles and everyone who knew her.
