On Thursday, May 16, the pop star Olivia Rodrigo‘s debut album Sour — which she released in 2021 — achieved a significant milestone by becoming the most streamed album by a female artist in Spotify history.
As per a press release, Sour “earned the most U.S. audio streams for a female debut album ever and broke the record for the most-streamed album in a week by a female artist on Spotify.”
The album also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and became “the longest-running debut album in the chart’s top 10 of the 21st century.
A representative for Rodrigo confirmed to PEOPLE that the album has accumulated over 21 million consumption units worldwide. At the time of its release, the “Get Him Back” singer, then 21, described the 11-track LP as deeply “personal and close to my heart.”
“Every song is so personal and close to my heart. Getting to share them with people is the most special thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Rodrigo shared on Instagram, posting behind-the-scenes photos from the project. “Thank u to everyone who made this album happen.”
“Lastly, thank you to Dan Nigro for making this entire body of work with me in his garage lol,” Rodrigo added. “His undeniable talent and undying belief in me has forever changed me as an artist and a person.”
The “Deja Vu” performer released her sophomore album GUTS in September 2023.
“Writing the first album, it just felt so spontaneous. I was 17 years old just pouring my heart out. This time I was in a different place and I was having a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations placed on me. I really had to try to block out the noise and just focus on the craft of songwriting,” Rodrigo told Apple Music 1 about making the album.
She added: “A lot of this album is about the confusion that comes with becoming a young adult and figuring out your place in this world. Figuring out who you want to be and who you want to hang out with and all of that stuff.”
