Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, confirmed her passing on Friday morning in a heartfelt statement.
They shared, “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.”
The statement also noted the deep grief felt by her family, saying, “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
Her family also expressed gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their kindness during her final days, adding,
“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Dame Maggie Smith’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning her two Academy Awards for her performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978).
Known to modern audiences for her iconic roles in Downton Abbey as the sharp-tongued Violet Crawley and as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, Smith leaves behind a rich legacy in both film and theater.
